Jay Z Mourns Black Culture In America In 4:44 Video

Hov shows the best and worst of black culture

4:44 has proven to be one of the most important Jay Z albums as far as speaking out goes. The album spends some time on Jay’s personal life but most of its 36 minute runtime is spend delving into Black Culture in America. ‘The Story Of O.J‘ brought the first video from the album. A critical look at America’s commodification of ‘Blackness’ and figureheads like O’J Simpson who never used their voice to speak against it.

For 4:44, he’s changed his focus. If ‘The Story of O.J’ is an attack on those who colluded against their own culture to make it out of poverty, ‘4:44’ goes for the people who are happy to keep their culture there. The video is a mix of footage taken from YouTube and WorldStarHipHop showing what Jay sees as the worst of his culture mixed with some of the best. Talented kids singing are balanced with fights, road rage and more.
