Mobb Deep loses one half of its duo, hip hop loses a legend
When you look back at the history of hip op, Mobb Deep are a pretty early entry on the scene. In hip hop terms they’ve been around for more than half the lifespan of the genre. Old souls they might be but not old men. When someone with the kind of impact Prodigy has had passes away, the impact is felt. When they die so young, it’s even worse.
Albert Johnson had been sick for large portions of his life but never let it stop him from living up to his talent. Along with Havoc, he made up half Hip hop artists never truly retire and Prodigy was still performing up until he was hospitalised.
Mobb’s publicist released the following statement about his passing;
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
