Gook is a moody look into LA in the 90s
Everyone has seen the pictures of Asian store owners sitting on top of their stores during the LA Riots. It looked like something from a western but for many was all too real. The story has been touched in in films like Straight Outta Compton and Do The Right Thing but its never seen its own telling. GOOK is set to change that. The film follows two Asian-American brothers running a store in a black neighborhood. Their friendship with a young black girl and their struggles to keep their store open are the centre of the film. In the midsts of this, as riots break out across the city, they are drawn into the middle of it. Writer, directer and star Justin Chon has a story he wants to tell. Judging by the trailer, has found the way to tell it in.
