The Best Urban Movies On Netflix

You might want to watch a great film but with Netflix right there it’s a lot easier to put on whatever you can find. Don’t bother making the sacrifice when you can follow our list of the best urban movies on netflix right now.

Attack the Block

A tower block in London becomes the site of an alien invasion forcing a group of teenagers to fight them back. This film brought John Boyega the attention that got him the part of Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s hilarious and doesn’t lose its urban setting in the middle of the alien invasion. It’s also got some great performances from a pretty young cast.

The Get Down

This one isn’t a movie but it’s still worth mentioning. The show follows the birth of hip hop in New York and manages to set the scene incredibly well. Nas produced the show with Grandmaster Flash consulting on the project. A young version of Flash also shows up as a character in the show. Guaranteed The Get Down would’ve been Netflix’s stand out production last year if it didn’t come out at the same time as Stranger Things. There are some great urban movies on Netflix but their own show stands up with the best of them.

Fruitvale Station

Michael B. Jordan is turning himself into one of the biggest young stars around. That didn’t start with Fruitvale Station but the film showed off the range he could play. The film is based on the true story of Oscar Grant. It takes place over the course of one day, following Grant through his life up to an incident that happens in Fruitvale Metro Station in Oakland.

Spring Breakers

Any movie with Gucci Mane playing an allegorical version of God is one to watch. Harmony Korine takes a bunch of ex child stars keen to get their hands on credible adult roles and makes one of the weirdest films of the last few years.

White Girl

White Girl follows on in the footsteps of Spring Breakers. The innocent girl who gets in with the bad guys but which of them is really worse. The film doesn’t pull any punches with its depictions of sex, drug abuse and violence.

Training Day

Ethan Hawke’s first day on the job with his new partner, Detective Alonzo Harris, takes a turn south quickly. It becomes clear that Alonzo is much worse than most of the criminals they’re going after. With more than enough award nods when it came out, Training Day is one of the best urban movies on Netflix or anywhere else.

Alpha Dog

A kidnapping over a drug debt goes as wrong as a kidnapping over a drug debt can. Alpha Dog covers the true story of the kidnapping of a man over a debt owed by his brother. The film takes on a complex subject and manages to balance everything that led up to the kidnapping on both sides.

Paid In Full

Mekhi Phifer, Wood Harris and Cam’ron lead a cast as three friends building an empire in drug dealing in Harlem. They navigate their way through trying to make their own lives better while struggling with their conscience over what they’re doing.

City Of God

Both sides of Rio De Janeiro are represented by two childhood friends who become a drug dealer and a photographer.

Four Brothers

Four Brothers should have been a gritty story about revenge. Instead it’s an action film about revenge. It’s still a good film even if not in the way the direction intended.

The Town

Ben Affleck directs one of the best urban movies on Netflix with a story of two friends planning a robbery. One makes the mistake of falling in love with the bank teller from their previous robbery.

These are some of the best urban films on Netflix. What did we miss? Let us know in the comments.
