The Top 4 of This Year’s Dumbest Hip Hop Beef
There are a lot of rappers who have beef for understandable reasons, a lot more use them for publicity. In the social media age it’s a lot easier for people to pop off half cocked nonsense as start shit they never would have started otherwise. Here’s our list of the dumbest hip hop beef in 2016.
Soulja Boy & Lil Yachty
Lil Yachty’s been a vocal Soulja Boy fan for his entire career . This took a turn when Soulja put up pictures on his instagram with his ex-girlfriend India Love. Yachty text him asking him to take the pictures down, claiming he was dating Love. Honestly his request was pretty reasonable but Soulja took offence and went looking for beef. He posted more pictures and claimed Love and Yachty had never even met.
Hip hop beef over girls is nothing new. The difference here is Soulja’s involvement became a huge embarrassment for everyone involved. He spent a few days making threats before he realized Yachty wasn’t backing down. He tried to end the beef by posting a video on instagram about how much he loved Yachty, blaming the beef on his lack of weed.
His ‘one day offer’ didn’t get much response from Yachty so Soulja Boy threw himself back into the beef. It was a lame attempt to keep credibility that he’d long since lost. Nobody bought into it. When you have everyone from Keke Palmer to 21 Savage calling your beef ridiculous, it’s time to give up.
Young Thug & Plies
After Plies posted a video on Instagram of Young Thug’s daughter saying she was ‘motherfuckin tired’ Thug shot back telling him to take down the video. It’s not the first time in hip hop beef over someone’s kids has come up. Just look at literally any time someone’s brought up Eminem’s daughters.
This one’s a lot cornier though. It was clear from the beginning that Plies only posted the video to say he was tired and didn’t intend to take a shot at Young Thug. Plies responded with a video saying he would never disrespect someone’s children but the video is as hilarious as the beef is pointless. He pulls out the line ‘I still think she’s speaking for me’ which is nice but loses a lot of steam when you realise it’s a rapper talking about a toddler.
Standing up for your kid is admirable, so is standing up for yourself. But when two people in hip hop beef over something that should never have been a problem in the first place, it’s hard to take either seriously.
The Game & Stitches
Part time rap artist, full time beef haver The Game didn’t start his beef with Stitches this year but it got to it’s most ridiculous at the beginning of the year. After looking to start trouble with The Game in a clear publicity stunt, Stitches got knocked out by The Game’s manager.
Rather than letting that be the end of it, Stitches tried to ride to hype from Game’s beef with Meek Mill by reminding him that there’s wasn’t finished. Apparently, being knocked out wasn’t enough as he wouldn’t let it go despite nobody paying attention to the sideshow against the bigger artists.
In early 2016, Stitches revealed he had been signed by Wack 100, the same man who knocked him out. Whatever credibility the beef might have had went out the window with this move but hopefully it also means the last we’ll hear about it.
Jay Z & Kanye West
This is one of the dumbest hip hop beefs because so much of what has come out about it came from other people. It came as a surprise to fans as Jay and Ye had seemed like to be getting along great. According to sources in the Jay Z camp, he’d been sick of Kanye for a long time. While most of the problem stems from Kanye not wanting to be tied down by Tidal, an otherwise justifiable problem blew up when everyone went looking to make the story personal.
Daily reports on the ‘Kanye/Jay Z beef’ with barely any information coming from the artists themselves got old fast. Maybe it’s the price of celebrity but most of the friction is down to the audience and media making the story for themselves.
It’s also worth mentioning Kanye’s beef with Wiz Khalifa but at least in that case both rappers actually took part.
