South African duo Die Antwoord are breaking up in 2017.

Formed back in 2008, Die Antwoord said throughout their career they plan on releasing five albums before disbanding.

With Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid on the way this September, and Ninja’s latest announcement, it seems like they’re sticking to their word.

Speaking with Exclaim!, Ninja confirmed that the band will break up in September 2017. “Die Antwoord dies on that day. It’s all over. I feel beautiful about it. I’m not scared of the end. I’m a Ninja. I’m not scared of death.”

In their 8 years on the music scene, the band have brought out a whole host of unique projects. Their music videos serve more as short films, and they’re probably the first artists to successfully combine rap and rave.

The band’s individual style has garnered them a cult following, with their role in Chappie also giving a hand in making their star rise.

However the band’s single “Enter The Ninja” was what first catapulted them to fame. The single gained them a cult following with their aforementioned unique projects quickly gaining them attention.

Since then they’ve went on to gain celebrity fans, some even appearing in their music videos, including Dita Von Teese, Cara Delevingne and Marilyn Manson.

What’s next for Die Antwoord?

Although the band is set to break up next year, Yolandi and Ninja still have more projects in the pipeline.

“There’s this movie we’re making called South African Ninja, that we’ve been working on forever — literally like ten years — and we’ve just been finishing it off now,” Ninja says. “That’s been our well that we’ve been drinking from and drawing from since the beginning of Die Antwoord. We actually started writing it before Die Antwoord. So, it’s been in the background for all of our ideas, which have all come from this film. It’s a South African gangster film that has African ninjas in it. Everything in the film is fictitious, like a regular movie, but it’s hard and raw, and everything has some parallel to our lives, so it’s got a surreal connection to everything.”

In addition to this sad announcement, the band have released the latest single from Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid. Listen to “Fat Faded Fuck Face” below and let us know what you think!
